Human beings are built to belong to various groups not because we are totally dependent upon relationships and co-existence but because for one to thrive and survive we need a certain sense of belonging; family, friendships and intimacy as theorized by Abraham Maslow
A lot of us are members of a family, religious groups, self-help groups, a professional hub, friends and soul partners brought together by various means, we live and we love. However, on some occasions we fail to notice the importance of the people we see every day, people that shape and support us.
Only on rare occasions do you see us having and tapping into a support system.
Let’s take a moment to explore the imaginative eye:
We’re in a cozy living room, its dimly lit with an orange bulb-like type of glow, there’s males and females. They are young; caught up in excited chatter. There is a wholeness about the air, an atmosphere of laughter and togetherness…a bond.
Its freedom an openness to life.
Now we are in an office setup. Males and females alike in a closed door focus group brood over an issue of importance, it’s a loud exchange, thought bubbles fly across the room.
There is an exchange of ideas, feelings… experience.
There is a 5 a side game going on, there are two teams and one goal…to win. There is an energy in the air it’s refreshing.
Its Independence Day, celebrations across the nation, various tribes decked beautifully in ethnic attire. There’s greens and whites.
It’s a beautiful day out, 7 individuals; a father, a mother and their children position themselves for some sort of family photo-shoot. They are awkward and carefree; happy. They switch positions as a unit.
There is an understanding and a candid creation of memories.
Life is a lot of things but constant.
People are a necessity
We meet, we love, we fail, we forgive.
There is a beauty in the coming together of a people
A need for open arms, listening ears and a steady shoulder.
Our existence goes beyond an expression of self
We thrive in the deepening of our bonds
Grow stronger through active co-existence.
We learn and rise.
And what is life, when it’s not lived in the sun.
“Man is an entity independent of himself. He is community; a herald of different pieces of existence.” – Anna Suberu
